Walt Whitman

Went to the Walt Whitman Birthplace on route 110 in Long Island for a master class and reading with master poet CK Williams this past weekend.  I've lived on Long Island for over ten years and have never been there.  I feel embarrassed to admit it, but I went, and it was a small oasis, across from the Walt Whitman Mall, yes, ironic, poetry and commerce. (Go there, some great programs for young people and adults alike who love writing!!)  But perhaps Whitman would have understood.  He was a wheeler dealer of poetry -- self publishing his famous poem  'Leaves of Grass,' and then writing his own reviews for it.  Whitman saw himself as the poet of Democracy... I teach him now in my class at City College.  And I even, at first connected him to LIE, though the connection didn't last editing... I leave it for a tease for now...countdown to LIE continues!!
